Benefits of Cannabis for Soil
As a result of research, we learned how beneficial cannabis is for human health in a medical sense. So, do we know the benefits of cannabis for soil health? Cannabis is an important crop for crop rotation for a variety of reasons. First of all, although hemp is an annual crop, its roots go deep into the soil. This not only helps hold the soil together, reduces erosion, but also loosens the soil, allowing more sensitive plants to grow later on. Second, hemp produces a high amount of biomass (a substance that returns and decomposes, feeding nutrients back into the soil). Therefore, hemp is often grown alternately with winter grains that require high-quality soil. Another incredible potential use for cannabis crops is the use of plants for bioremediation or to decontaminate soil and water after industrial pollution or accidents. Cannabis plants can grow in contaminated soil without any ill effects, by absorbing heavy metals and toxins into the plants themselves. Although studies are currently underway to evaluate potential applications for this property, hemp has already been used to good effect in tests at Chernobyl following the 1986 nuclear disaster.
